[lug] SIOCSIFADDR: No such device

Hey all, when I use a 2.4 kernel to boot and I try
to run the following command

ifconfig eth0 my.ip.address.

I get the following output..
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device

When I use a 2.2 kernel all works fine..

Any ideas?
