I haven't followed this entire thread, but I thought I would throw in my
two cents.

On my machine that is doing multiple ip's per nic.  The alias cfg files
only have IPADDR,NETMASK, and BOOTPROTO lines.

Try removing the DEVICE line from your ifcfg-eth0:1.

I also have my aliases starting at eth0:0.

Don't know if that makes a difference.

This is on a redhat 6.2 machine as well.
