[lug] compiling sounds into 2.4.2

i am having some problems compiling sound into 2.4.2 i have only :

  <M> Sound card support
  <M> ESS Maestro, Maestro2, Maestro2E driver

in my kernel config, however i get

  make[2]: *** [sound_core.o] Error 1
  make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.2/drivers/sound'
  make[1]: *** [_modsubdir_sound] Error 2
  make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.2/drivers'
  make: *** [_mod_drivers] Error 2

so i am not sure if there is a dependency that i do not have enabled or
what. any thoughts on where sound_core.o might live in menuconfig so that
i can enable it or mess with it to see if i can get some other response?
