the curious might also want to look at

which is the home of two "information bots", purl and url.  you can
interact with them on irc.infobot.org, if i remember correctly.

other "famous" bots are NickServ and ChanServ (used by irc networks to
reserve nicknames and channels, respectively).  also popular is the
"eggdrop" bot, which was originally coded in tcl(!), and has the
ability to network with other bots and even humans, by allowing telnet
connections between the bots (so these communications are out of band
w.r.t. the irc servers).
