[lug] CD drives

Hi, everyone.

When I put in a CD, the drive spins up, the light blinks, and then the
light either stays on (indicating that it is ready to use the CD) and
the drive stays spinning, or the light turns off (indicating some sort
of problem, presumably) and the drive stops spinning.  Happens with
both data and music CDs.  The CD-ROM lens cleaner has had no
noticeable effect.

The success rate has gradually decreased from about 95% a year ago to
close enough to zero today (spending several minutes pushing the damn
button)...  Unless anybody has any clever ideas, I hereby declare my
CD drive dead.

Any recommendations for affordable CD-ROM drives?
