You don't have to do this.  Linux will boot from non-ext2 filesystems
without this.

All major distributions supply bootable ISO-9660 CDROMs.  ('El Torito' is
the standard for bootable ISO-9660 filesystems; see 'man mkisofs').  And
many people now run with either a ReiserFS root or XFS root.

What's the output of 'cat /proc/filesystems' on a system booted with your
rescue kernel?
