[lug] It slows down

David, I suggest that you continually log system activity with sar(1).  After the slowdown occurs, you can stop the sar process, and review the results to determine which subsystem is degrading your performance.

Also, try using 'top' to determine if any single process is hogging the CPU and/or memory.  It can also identify things like excessive swapping and excessive kernel CPU utilization.  You can dig even further with programs like vmstat and iostat.
