Um, what type of laptop?
But just in case it is a thinkpad. there is a thinkpad daemon program
that you can install to controll all the nead under-the-hood features of
the laptop. I believe it is tpctl. search Sourceforge for it. It gives
you the options of turning on the external vga connection or not.
