I am running low on ideas. But, I did a test with my logitech wheel
mouse (non-optical). I set my protocol to just PS/2, and xev shows no
wheel events (even with ZAxisMapping 4 5). Next, I set it to IMPS/2,
went init 3 (non-X), then init 5 (RH's gdm/kdm/xdm/graphical mode). xev
then properly shows that the wheel, moving in one direction, is a button
5 event (actually, a pair of events, I think down/up), or in the other
direction, a button 4 event.
