Hi,
Actually /var/log/messages revealed the problem
Aug 18 10:41:01 localhost kernel: eth0: SMC1211TX EZCard 10/100 (RealTek
RTL8139) at 0x1400, IRQ 0, 00:00:e8:88:3f:0d.
The IRQ 0 was suspect in addition to the card being a SMC, although HP could
just be putting their name on it. When I replaced the card with the Intel
card QWest sent with the modem, everything works fine and the IRQ is now 9.
Aug 18 12:55:35 localhost kernel: eth0: Intel PCI EtherExpress Pro100 at
0xc8069000, 00:03:47:97:F8:A5, IRQ 9.
thanks,
Keith
