Here are the relevant sections of XF86Config-4:

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier "NEC E1100"
        VendorName "Unknown"
        ModelName "Unknown"
        HorizSync 31 - 82
        VertRefresh 55 - 120
        Option "dpms"
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier "nVidia Corporation|NV11 DDR"
        Driver "nvidia"
        BoardName "Unknown"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Screen0"
        Device "nVidia Corporation|NV11 DDR"
        Monitor "NEC E1100"
        DefaultDepth 24
        Subsection "Display"
                Depth 24
                Modes "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768"
        EndSubSection
        Subsection "Display"
                Depth 8
                Modes "640x480"
        EndSubSection
EndSection

Changing the driver from "nv" (XF86) to "nvidia" (proprietary) made 1280x1024 unavailable. I don't see where I can correlate particular modes with specific refresh rates. How is that accomplished? How can I tell what my current refresh rate is?

I'd be inclined to believe that this figure includes all those things you mentioned above. Either way, I'm happy with the performance so far. Only snag I've run into is that the (binary only) NVidia driver doesn't want to run at 1280x1024, but likes 1152x862 just fine. I have admittedly not RTFM on the NVidia site. Has anyone else had success running this driver at higher resolutions?
