You may have been thinking of my post a while ago about hardware MJPEG
capturing from/to a video source (recording and playback). Unfortunately,
MJPEG is REALLY huge. A couple of hours of MJPEG video in high resolution
can easily eat up 30+GB.
I was able to use some tools from the mjpeg project at sourceforge to
create an mpeg, but was never able to get it to re-combine the audio and
video streams. The error I got was frequently asked about and never
answered. I finally gave up.
I believe there's software for Linux for reading the MiniDV data over
firewire, and playing it back to the screen. I haven't really investigated
it, I just saw it in my searches.
