I'm running kernel version 2.4.3 (SMP) under Red Hat 7.1. There seems to 
be a conflict under Red Hat, which starts magicdev under X, and 
gcombust. Any attempts to write disks while magicdev is running results 
in a corrupted disk. The only solution to this problems that I know 
works is to kill magicdev.

I'd rather leave magicdev running, since I cannot be bothered to type 
"mount /mnt/cdrom" every time I insert a CD. :-)

Does anyone know if there is a fix for this problem?

The root of the problem is the SCSI driver (ide-scsi or other parts of 
the SCSI subsystem), which should be smart enough not to allow anything 
to interfere with a write operation. However, magicdev is rather 
obnoxious when confronted with a disk that cannot be read -- rather than 
give up, it tries very hard to read it, filling up my logs with "cdrom: 
This disc doesn't have any tracks I recognize!".
