Yes OK, but when you say "kill eth0" how exactly are you doing
this?  Killing it directly by typing say

   ifdown eth0

or maybe

   ifconfig eth0 down

may not be the same as running the 

   /etc/rc.d/init.d/networking stop

script that would be executed when changing run levels using init.  My
guess is that this script is what is hanging.
