[lug] Unable to cleanly reboot

Well, folks, that was it. I reinstalled onto a new HDD with a brand-new clean 
/usr and /var, and it boots and reboots like a champ. Many thanks for all the 
tips. Now, to figure out why Samba and Apache don't work any more...
