There has been a configuration option available since one of the 2.2.x
kernels to enable DMA by default, which I would guess is how most of the
distros are configuring the kernel which they install.  Nevertheless, it
remains an option - it isn't mandatory; so there may be some distros out
there which are not configuring this way.
