You don't need to go back to 3.3.x. If you do, it won't get rid of the
missing RENDER extension since that extension is only available to the 4.x
series of X servers. The RENDER extension is what helps KDE provide
anti-aliased fonts and displays. The extension is built into the X server,
if it's there at all. KDE just makes use of it.
I'd say if the X environment comes up with just this one message, you're
fine. It's possible the S3Virge is supported under 4.x the same way it was
under 3.3.x, it just (still) doesn't have hardware acceleration.
There is probably a way to start KDE without using the RENDER extension,
though I don't know what it is.
