I've been running the newest version of VMware Workstation, version 3.0.
It doesn't require kernel patches anymore, it uses a pair of kernel
modules: vmmon and vmnet. Versions of these modules are included for
most distribution kernels, and the source is included so that they can
be compiled for non-standard kernels.
You can install as a file or partition, as John mentions.
Performance is _very_ dependent on memory. It was slow but usable when
I had 128 MB, but when I installed 512 MB, VMware seems to run just as
fast as running Windows 98 on the metal.
