Indeed, but considering that it's splitting the system resources more or
less 50 / 50, it's to be expected.  It's very usable on my 700 Mhz w/ 128
MB though.

Agreed.  I've come close to having that happen as well.  One way to help
avoid that situation would be to turn off the timed auto-boot feature in
lilo.conf.
