actually, i read the LWP::Simple man page as exporting $ua as an
instance of LWP::UserAgent, so presumably one can do whatever one
likes with it.

as for why this particular program is breaking, i couldn't see
anything obvious, and i don't have the time to try anything devious at
the moment...
