Problem solved. I sent an e-mail to support at Xi Graphics,
and got an almost immediate reply telling me how to change
the default visual. That seems to have corrected most
(if not all of the problems).

In retrospect, XFree86 4.1 may have been ok afterall.
The colors in the "pseudo color 8" overlay window were
wrong with both XFree86 4.1 and Accelerated-X, so I think
maybe I need to re-create the IDL color table that my IDL
procedure loads. Everything else seems ok, so far.
