I've also had mostly good experiences with the LTModem driver available
at:
http://www.heby.de/ltmodem
It will occasionally hang my system (for instance, if I try to suspend
the laptop after the modem has been running or if I hit any <ctrl>-<alt>
key sequence while the modem is dialing-in).
If that doesn't work for you, then there are real hardware-based PCMCIA
modems (or modem/ethernet combo cards) compatible with Linux. See
