Sure! You need two things: (1) a "crossover" ethernet cable, and (2) the
server has to be setup as a router. I believe that you can setup Linux as a
router, although I'm not sure how.
As for the cable, I'm assuming you're using regular ol' twisted pair (RJ45
connectors, 8 wires). I think you can buy these cables at any computer
store. Basically, there are two recieve wires and two transmit wires. When
you connect to a hub, the hub will conenct the transmit and recieves for each
port for you. In a direct connection, you need to make the connection, and
that's what the crossover cable does.
Each RJ-45 has 8 pins/wires. Basically, NIC cards only uses 4 of the wires,
namely pins 1, 2, 3, and 6. If you hold the connector with the spring clip
down, pin 1 is on the left.
For a crossover cable, you connect:
Pin 1 --> Pin 3
Pin 2 --> Pin 6
Pin 3 --> Pin 1
Pin 6 --> Pin 2
You can ignore the rest of the pins.
More information then you wanted, right? ;)
