Not positive, but I think the graphical installs use the VESA
framebuffer, which is far different compared to the X11 code, and not
nearly as debugged on some video cards. But one comment on memory
testing, it does not always show up bad memory, and when it does, often
it requires continuous testing for 24 hours. Signal 11 during a running
program probably indicates the program has a bug, with the exceptions
that compression/decompression or compiling are very highly suspect of
bad memory. There are many cases where hardware is marginal and works at
first, but then fails later because heat slowly builds up (heat is the
modern computer's enemy). So a very important question is whether the
signal 11 occurs during a file decompression or compression, when using
text mode install.
