Hey, at least you didn't try to move /lib to /home/lib like I did once!

I have run into this problem a few times in the past (as you might guess
from the above), and in general the only good solution is to get a larget
disk so that you can allocate 2 GB to the root partition (and I too use
only / and /data (/home is in /data)....simplifies everything that way.
If you need to make space, you can link a few non-vital directories to a
larger partition.... /usr/src is an ideal candidate for this is you
compile a lot of programs there, and /usr/local is another great choice as
nothing vital gets put there. Moving /usr/doc, /usr/share/doc will provide
a bit more room, but some programs could conceivably yell at you if you
move /usr/share, though it is very unlikely.
