i once had to deal with the iomega external CD-RW on a mac, and it was
nothing but pain.  searching the web, it seems that the consensus
explaination was that apple wants people to use firewire / ilink /
1394 for high speed/bandwidth application, and leave USB only for
low-speed devices (mice, keyboards, etc).

thus, the usb drivers (at the very least) are really wretched under
mac OS.  i don't remember if anyone did a more (er) apples-to-apples
comparison on the same hardware between e.g. MacOS 9, OS X, and PPC
Linux or BSD...
