Thanks for the responses.

As for the root-on-a-floppy solution, I tried to
modify Debian's root disk, with no success.  I didn't
think to use the distributions-on-a-floppy.

Anyway, I have since given up on this.  At a friend's
suggestion, I ended up going to ext3 instead.

Perhaps I will play around with this again in the
future.
