Yes, I installed from Tarballs. Actually, now that you have the PHP rebuilt,
it will be pain free I promise.

It took an enormous number of package rebuilds to get the 3.0/2.0 on RH
7.1, I can probably get 3.1/2.1 eventually, but I suspect that there is
still a config problem whether I do that or not. Eventually I will, but
I'd like to know what the significance is of the mcal package, it seems
to only be for calender functions, and basic horde/imp should work fine
without it (so long as I'm not using the calender package). I am
assuming that all of your 3.1/2.1 installs were via tarball, is this
correct?
