First, do basic troubleshooting. Does it work if you connect from another
system? Does your client work if you connect to a different server? Does a
different client (package) work from your client machine? Does a different
server (version?) work from your client?
Once you have isolate if this is a client or server (or interaction) issue,
try to determine if it is a software or network issue. Bypass your home
firewall, for example.
Hope this gets you closer to the problem so someone can help you get closer to
an answer!
