Possibly, you have to convert your work into indexed format (with 256
or fewer colors), since that is the only format that GIF understands.
PNG will happily save 24-bit images, although I don't know how well
that interacts with the transparency features.

I don't recall offhand exactly how to do this, but it should be pretty
straightforward.
