Regarding modems under Linux, check the linmodems web site.  If it's an
internal modem, then more than likely it's a winmodem which diminishes
your chances of success to maybe 50% or so.

Other points to be aware of regarding hardware detection by Linux:

- /var/log/boot.msg, /var/log/messages: look for entries involving ttySn
(n = 0,1, ...) or clues about undetected devices

- /proc/devices: "cat /proc/devices"

- LDP HowTo documents: many distros include a good many of these.  Take a
look in /usr/share/doc to see what might be there, or "locate HOWTO" at
a command prompt.
