[lug] Did I get DOSed?

After getting notice that my family web server was not working, I looked 
at the log files and noticed several incrementing maillog messages 
starting at 00:45:41 Sunday the 4th:
sendmail[919]: rejecting connections on daemon MTA: load average: 46
sendmail[919]: runqueue: Skipping queue run -- load average too high
rejecting connections on daemon MTA: load average: 50 (This was the last 
of any activity for Sunday the 4th at 01:44:13).  Is this mail server 
load or system load?  Did I get DOSed?

In a quick fix effort, I just had the wife reboot the server.  I thought 
my AT&T connection might have expired my IP but on the rebound it had 
the same IP.

So basically I lost all services to the server and it did respond to a 
ping.  I tried nmap -O to see if it was still a Linux box but that 
didn't even work.
