Many Open Source projects follow Brooks' 'Surgical Team' model, with few
lead developers, and many supporting contributors.

Open Source projects don't often follow the "Waterfall" or "Spiral"
development models, which are falling into disrepute as guaranteed to
cause schedule and cost overruns, and dissatisfied customers. 

They are more likely to use short, iterative releases to guide the project,
rather than attempting to discover once and for all what the perfect
solution is before starting work.

The big thing Open Source contributes is an atmosphere of open inquiry
and discussion, as Wayde said.
