Suse 8 is free if you want to install over ftp.

I think Mandrake is nice. I use it on one of my machines. I just installed 
gentoo, and if you enjoy compiling everything, gentoo is the way to go. But 
for someone not familiar with linux, I'd recommend mandrake.
