My Girlfriend has a very similar setup - the Lite-On CDRW 48x12x48 and a DVD-ROM
drive with RH 8.0. Everything is great - XCDRoast works fine. I know that
RedHat 8.0 seems to try to automatically support CDRWs by passing the whole
hdc=ide-scsi option automatically in lilo.conf. Is this maybe a difference
between 8.0 and 7.3? By the way, her motherboard is a Tyan S1854A - the one
that came with that huge batch of Microns. I don't know if this helps any.
I have this same CDRW drive, and a KT333 mainboard with Athlon 2000XP, but not
RH 8.0 and it seems to be really sensitive to scratched CDs, which always give
me the DriveReady SeekFailure errors. But XCDRoast works for me as well.
Here's the output of my cdrecord -scanbus:
