[lug] Terminal resetting

Greetings,

Does anyone know how to restore a freaked out xterm window?

Here's what happens:

grep string * (and there's a file with a bunch of binary stuff in it)
Then the xterm window comes back either all black or the characters are
invisible or something like that.

I can easily "cure" it by exiting and starting a new terminal, but I was
wondering if anyone knows how to fix it.

I've tried
stty sane
reset
tset

to no avail.
