The Halt and Catch Fire modem is a winmodem. Do they have linux
drivers for it now? amazing. ;)

Check your /etc/modules.conf to make sure the HCF install didn't put
something in there it shouldn't. You should have a 
'alias eth0 <something>' 

You might also try cold booting. Sometimes things can linger around
thru a warm boot. (ie, turn the machine totally off, wait a few
seconds and power it back up).
