I was also unsuccessful at setting up alsa on my Dell laptop. Even after
booting the SuSE Live CD, and using the same alsa modules, I couldn't get
it to work, and decided not to spend any more time on it, since the kernel
driver works just fine for my purposes. So I was trying to encourage you
to try using the kernel driver for your sound chip as an alternative.
Doing that would entail a minor edit of /etc/modules.conf. The file in
general is pretty well commented, so it shouldn't be too difficult. Alsa
loads on the order of 5 different components, whereas the kernel modules
ae a bit more straight-forward. I would recommend that you check the
kernel source to see if your sound chip is supported. The Linux / laptop
web site should provide some insight about it as well.
