For $300 to $400 you can get a 21" 1600x1280 or better resolution
display. The cheapest 19" 1600x1280 display I see available in
flat-panel is $1600.
17" 1280x1024 does seem to be the sweet spot for LCDs -- in my looking
around, there were a number in the <$600 range. However, the real deal
seems to be getting another CRT until the prices of LCDs drop some more.
You just can't beat the resolution.
Or, just get a whole fricking laptop... Why can you go from a 1024x768
laptop display to a 1600x1200 for only $300 on a laptop, when the same
upgrade for your desktop is $1300? ;-/
