I also experience frustration printing from VMWare Win98 guest OS to a
n IP-networked HP printer.  Once in a while, when I try to print an
Excel spreadsheet, I get garbage.  Other times, it works.  Lately,
I've resorted to the "Print to file" (using a basic LaserWriter PS
driver) followed by Linux 'lpr file' technique, which seems to hit
every time.  Go figure.
