I found the problem and thought I would share the answer just because it
is bizarre.

The system had a linksys LNE100 in it.  I booted to the latest tomsrtbt
and had the SAME PROBLEM.  Replacing the card resolved the issue.

It is either some sort of HW problem with the card or some problem with
the Linux driver for it.  This is a common card and I am highly skeptical
that it is the driver.  Tom's uses a 2.2 kernel and I am running a 2.4
kernel.  I have used this particular card very successfully with 2.0 and
2.2 kernels (IIRC) in the past.

What could go wrong with a NIC that would cause it to hang any TCP
transfer after 3M +/- a few k, but keep working for other or new
connections is quite beyond me.

Speculation is welcome ;-)
