Just curious... have you rebooted with the new kernel?  I do know you 
need to restart some services due to the new glibc updates.  Don't know 
if this could cause this behavior, but I restarted after the updates 
knowing to do so before hand.

If you don't want to reboot for the kernel update, you could just 'init 
1' then 'init 3 or 5' back in without loosing uptime to restart all 
services.
