A stock Debian kernel may have SCSI support for hard disks and 
CD-ROMs built in.  It definitely doesn't have generic (sg, for CD 
burners) built in.  The fact that the other SCSI modules could be 
loaded strongly suggests that this is the case.

As an aside, the 'st' module is not needed unless you have a SCSI 
tape drive.
