Several IRC programs are available. Check your graphical login menu for
X-Chat, or several "chat" programs. If you want a good command line
(text based, not graphical) chat program, check out "BitchX":
   http://www.bitchx.org
   http://www.bitchx.org/download.php
(compiling this from source code would be a good learning experience,
but not necessarily a requirement)

If you want to search for RPM format (package format of several
distributions), try:
   http://rpmfind.net
...and search for BitchX.

Binary forms are pre-built versions, that if they are compatible with
your system, will run "out of the box". Source forms are forms that work
over several versions that a binary might not work on, but require
compiling...the compiling builds the "out of the box" working format.

When using IRC, you connect to a server, then join a channel on the
server. A common linux help IRC would be to join irc.freenode.net, then
join a channel (all channels start with "#" symbol), e.g., join #linux,
#linuxhelp, #redhat. On a command line for IRC, you usually have a "/"
leading the command, e.g., on BitchX and several others, at the text
entry prompt you can do this:
/server irc.freenode.net
/join #linuxhelp
/leave #linuxhelp

For the hacking society, the commands on a text mode entry would be:
/server hacking society
/join #hackingsociety
...talk...
