I used to use a package called AIDE
(http://www.cs.tut.fi/~rammer/aide.html).  Worked great for me (this was
about three years ago).  I found that it did what I needed, without the
complexity of Tripwire.  I can never keep up with the licensing terms of
Tripwire.  AIDE is GPL.
