I have set up an officejet d135 (which is more or less a similar
device).  In that case I used the package hpoj and was able to use the
scanner and printer as well as set the time, read the display from an
xterm, etc.

Cups was able to see the printer w/o the hpoj stuff, but I used their
setup.  I can dig up the process if need be.
