Are you using devfs?  (I'm not a Debian user, so I don't know if they 
use a "full" /dev tree or a devfs setup.)  If so, the mouse will show 
up on /dev/misc/psaux and not /dev/psaux.  My XF86Config file has 
"/dev/mouse" as the device, which is a symlink to /dev/misc/psaux.
