Confirmed settings as suggested. Reconfig but still have problem. Eth0 is an
onboard Intel NIC and if IP is configured will enable ping to outside during
session. On shutdown/reboot get message "unable to determine IP address on
Eth0" and can no longer ping out or in. When checked Eth0 does not show IP,
etc that was configured before reboot. Checked script and it is there and
correct.
DEVICE=eth0
ONBOOT=yes
BOOTPROTO=static
IPADDR=xx.x.x.xx
NETMASK=xxx.xxx.x.x
Gateway=x.x.x.x
As an alternative configured Eth1 (PCI network card) with same IP, Subnet,
gateway etc and could ping out through that. On shutdown/reboot it too lost
all config info. Don't know whether this is hardware or software problem.
Any suggestins appreciated.
Tim

I assume you mean the Red Hat 9 distribution. Linux itself is only in
the 2.x releases ;-)
Anyway, check your /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 file, which
should contain at least these variables:
DEVICE=eth0
ONBOOT=yes
BOOTPROTO=static
IPADDR=x.x.x.x
NETMASK=x.x.x.x
