Sometimes it takes resorting to posting to find the answers...

In /etc/modules add "ignore=hdc" to the ide-cd line, e.g.
ide-cd ignore=hdc

In /boot/grub/menu.lst at the end of the kernel line add
hdc=scsi

It all worked fine after doing this.
