[lug] Curses mode screens gone FUBAR

I have a text-based system running RH 9.0 and when I tried to run 
netconfig the curses mode screen came up in a nearly unreadable and 
un-navigable state. I could see most of the dialogs, but there were many 
extraneous characters displayed around the screen and either the Tab key 
didn't work or the display wasn't updating, so I couldn't control the 
actions. Had to kill the process and log out.

Does anyone know how I can fix this?
